Angels in the Quran and Sunna

By: Maged Taman

1- The angels are created from light:

Allah created the angels from light, created the jinn from the pure flame of fire, and Adam from that which was described to you (i.e., the clay.) This is a sahihhadith (correct Hadith)

2- The angels have wings:

35:1 Praise be to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, who appointeth the angels messengers having wings two, three and four. He multiplieth in creation what He will. Lo! Allah is Able to do all things.

3- They can take the shape of humans:

51:24 Hath the story of Abraham's honored guests reached thee (O Muhammad)?
51:25 When they came in unto him and said: Peace! he answered, Peace! (and thought): Folk unknown (to me).

4- Angels have emotions: they love what God love:

The Prophet (PBUH) , said, "When Allah ,loves someone he calls to Jibreel (angel) saying, 'O Jibreel, I love such and such a person so love him.' Then Jibreel will call to the (angels) of the heavens, 'Allah loves such and such a person so love him.' And the angels will love. And then Allah , will place acceptance on earth for that Believers. ( Bukhari and Muslim)

5- The angels obey God's orders:

66:6 O ye who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels strong, severe, who resist not Allah in that which He commandeth them, but do that which they are commanded.

6- Though Angels do not oppose God, they can express their opinion:

2:30 And when thy Lord said unto the angels: Lo! I am about to place a viceroy in the earth, they said: wilt Thou place therein one who will do harm therein and will shed blood, while we, we hymn Thy praise and sanctify Thee? He said: Surely I know that which ye know not.

7- Adam is created after them but was superior in knowledge compared to them:

2:31 And He taught Adam all the names, then showed them to the angels, saying: Inform me of the names of these, if ye are truthful.

2:32 They said: Be glorified! We have no knowledge saving that which Thou hast taught us. Lo! Thou, only Thou, art the Knower, the Wise.

2:33 He said: O Adam! Inform them of their names, and when he had informed them of their names, He said: Did I not tell you that I know the secret of the heavens and the earth? And I know that which ye disclose and which ye hide.

8- They have prostrated to Adam the first man: acknowledging his superiority over them. Satan or Iblis had high ranking of Jinn though he was not an angel he was in the ranks of those close to God of them.

2:34 And when We said unto the angels: Prostrate yourselves before Adam, they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. He demurred through pride, and so became a disbeliever.

9- Believing in the angels is one of the tenants of faith:

2:285 The messenger believeth in that which hath been revealed unto him from his Lord and (so do) the believers. Each one believeth in Allah and His angels and His scriptures and His messengers--We make no distinction between any of His messengers--and they say: We hear, and we obey. (Grant us) Thy forgiveness, our Lord. Unto Thee is the journeying.

10- However the angels are not objects of worship:

3:80 And he commanded you not that ye should take the angels and the Prophets for lords. Would he command you to disbelieve after ye had surrendered (to Allah)?

11- The angels praise God:

7:206 Those who are near to thy Lord, disdain not to do Him worship: They celebrate His praises, and bow down before Him.

13:13 The thunder hymneth His praise and (so do) the angels for awe of Him. He launcheth the thunder bolts and smiteth with them whom He will while they dispute (in doubt) concerning Allah, and He is mighty in wrath.

42:5 Almost might the heavens above be rent asunder while the angels hymn the praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on the earth. Lo! Allah is the Forgiver, the Merciful.

12- The angels bless and pray to God so we be saved:

42:5 Almost might the heavens above be rent asunder while the angels hymn the praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on the earth. Lo! Allah is the Forgiver, the Merciful.

33:43 He it is who blesseth you, and His angels (bless you), that He may bring you forth from darkness unto light; and He is Merciful to the believersهُوَ الَّذِي يُصَلِّي عَلَيْكُمْ وَمَلَائِكَتُهُ لِيُخْرِجَكُم مِّنَ الظُّلُمَاتِ إِلَى النُّورِ وَكَانَ بِالْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَحِيمًا (33:43)

33:56 Lo! Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O ye who believe! Ask blessings on him and salute him with a worthy salutation.

13- The angels are the messengers between God and his prophets:

22:75 Allah chooseth from the angels messengers, and (also) from mankind. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Seer.

16:2 He sendeth down the angels with the Spirit of His command unto whom He will of His bondmen, (saying): Warn mankind that there is no god save Me, so keep your duty unto Me.

3:45 (And remember) when the angels said: O Mary! Allah giveth thee glad tidings of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Jesus, son of Mary, illustrious in the world and the Hereafter, and one of those brought near (unto Allah).

14- They descend in the day of decree in Ramadan:

97:4 The angels and the Spirit descend therein, by the permission of their Lord, with all decrees.

15- Angels fight with the believers:

3:124 And when thou didst say unto the believers: Is it not sufficient for you that your Lord should support you with three thousand angels sent down (to your help)?

16- They do not appear to humans since they are peaceful by nature:

17:95 Say: If there were in the earth angels walking secure, We had sent down for them from heaven an angel as messenger.

17- They are however very powerful but they only use this power when ordered by God:

16:33 Await they aught save that the angels should come unto them or thy Lord's command should come to pass? Even so did those before them. Allah wronged them not, but they did wrong themselves,

18- There are guardian angels:

13:11 For him are angels ranged before him and behind him who guard him by Allah's command. Lo! Allah changeth not the condition of a folk until they (first) change that which is in their hearts; and if Allah willeth misfortune for a folk there is none that can repel it, nor have they a defender beside Him.

19- There are angels of death:

32:11 Say: The angel of death, who hath charge concerning you, will gather you, and afterward unto your Lord ye will be returned.

16:28 Whom the angels cause to die while they are wronging themselves. Then will they make full submission (saying): We used not to do any wrong. Nay! Surely Allah is Knower of what ye used to do.

16:32 Those whom the angels cause to die (when they are) good. They say: Peace be unto you! Enter the Garden because of what ye used to do.

20- When God judges us the angels will be around the throne: It will be a majestic scene.

39:75 And thou (O Muhammad) seest the angels thronging round the Throne, hymning the praises of their Lord. And they are judged aright. And it is said: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

21- There will be angles for the hellfire:

66:6 O ye who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels strong, severe, who resist not Allah in that which He commandeth them, but do that which they are commanded.

22- There will be angels to the garden or paradise:

13:23 gardens of Eden which they enter, along with all who do right of their fathers and their helpmeets and their seed. The angels enter unto them from every gate.

16:32 Those whom the angels cause to die (when they are) good. They say: Peace be unto you! Enter the garden because of what ye used to do.
