Some Similitude in the Quran

By: Maged Taman

1- God does not find it unsuitable for him to give a similitude: this is a well known way of teaching in humans. Jesus(PBUH) his great prophet had used to tell people parables to understand his points.

2:26 Lo! Allah disdaineth not to coin the similitude even of a gnat. Those who believe know that it is the truth from their Lord; but those who disbelieve say: What doth Allah wish (to teach) by such a similitude? He misleadeth many thereby, and He guideth many thereby; and He misleadeth thereby only miscreants;

2- God has the sublime similitude and the unbelievers have the evil similitude:

16:60 For those who believe not in the Hereafter is an evil similitude, and Allah's is the Sublime similitude. He is the Mighty, the Wiseلِلَّذِينَ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالآخِرَةِ مَثَلُ السَّوْءِ وَلِلّهِ الْمَثَلُ الأَعْلَىَ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ (16:60)

3- We should not give God the similitude he is the creator and all knowing:

16:74 So coin not similitudes for Allah. Lo! Allah knoweth; ye know not.

4- God light is like the pure light of a lightening lamp its energy from the best of oil:

24:35 Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a shining star. (This lamp is) kindled from a blessed tree, an olive neither of the East nor of the West, whose oil would almost glow forth (of itself) though no fire touched it. Light upon light, Allah guideth unto His light whom He will. And Allah speaketh to mankind in allegories, for Allah is knower of all things.

5- Why people would ascribe to God partners and they do not partner the others in their possessions:

30:28 He coineth for you a similitude of yourselves. Have ye, from among those whom your right hands possess, partners in the wealth We have bestowed upon you, equal with you in respect thereof, so that ye fear them as ye fear each other (that ye ascribe unto Us partners out of that which We created)? Thus We display the revelations for people who have sense.

6- If the mountain would understand Arabic he will be humbled and rent asunder if the Quran had been recited into him:

59:21 If We had caused this Qur'an to descend upon a mountain, thou (O Muhammad) verily hadst seen it humbled, rent asunder by the fear of Allah. Such similitudes coin We for mankind that haply they may reflect.

7- Resurrection is like the revival of the dead land after God have sent the rain into it:

22:5 O mankind! if ye are in doubt concerning the Resurrection, then lo! We have created you from dust, then from a drop of seed, then from a clot, then from a little lump of flesh shapely and shapeless, that We may make (it) clean for you. And We cause what We will to remain in the wombs for an appointed time, and afterward We bring you forth as infants, then (give you growth) that ye attain your full strength. And among you there is he who dieth (young), and among you there is he who is brought back to the most abject time of life, so that, after knowledge, he knoweth naught. And thou (Muhammad) seest the earth barren, but when We send down water thereon, it doth thrill and swell and put forth every lovely kind (of growth).

8- The truth is like the water flows to revive the land while the falsehood is the foam that has no value: a similar example is the foam of the jewellery that is has no value.

13:17 He sendeth down water from the sky, so that valleys flow according to their measure, and the flood beareth (on its surface) swelling foam from that which they felt in the fire in order to make ornaments and tools riseth a foam like unto it thus Allah coineth (the similitude of) the true and the false. Then, as for the foam, it passeth away as scum upon the banks, while, as for that which is of use to mankind, it remaineth in the earth. Thus Allah coineth the similitudes. -

9- That who follow God is like the one who is walking in light and the one who is astray is like the one who is walking in darkness:

6:122 Is he who was dead and We have raised him unto life, and set for him a light wherein he walketh among men, as him whose similitude is in utter darkness whence he cannot emerge? Thus is their conduct made fair-seeming for the disbelievers.

10- The work of the unbelievers is like ashes in a stormy day:

14:18 A similitude of those who disbelieve in their Lord: Their works are as ashes which the wind bloweth hard upon a stormy day. They have no control of aught that they have earned. That is the extreme failureمَّثَلُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِرَبِّهِمْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ كَرَمَادٍ اشْتَدَّتْ بِهِ الرِّيحُ فِي يَوْمٍ عَاصِفٍ لاَّ يَقْدِرُونَ مِمَّا كَسَبُواْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الضَّلاَلُ الْبَعِيدُ (14:18)

11- The good saying is like a goodly tree and the bad saying is like bad tree:

14:24 Seest thou not how Allah coineth a similitude: A goodly saying, as a goodly tree, its root set firm, its branches reaching into heaven,
14:25 Giving its fruit at every season by permission of its Lord? Allah coineth the similitudes for mankind in order that they may reflect.
14:26 And the similitude of a bad saying is as a bad tree, uprooted from upon the earth, possessing no stability.

12- God give similitude the independent and free (God) and the bonded and dependent chattel slave (the partners they ascribe to him): the similitude is well given to the Arabs at that time however we can easily get the meaning.
16:75 Allah coineth a similitude: (on the one hand) a (mere) chattel slave, who hath control of nothing, and (on the other hand) one on whom We have bestowed a fair provision from Us, and he spendeth thereof secretly and openly. Are they equal? Praise be to Allah! But most of them know not.

13- God give a similitude about the incompetent man (partners) and the competent and wise (God): another example common in this culture.

16:76 And Allah coineth a similitude. Two men, one of them dumb, having control of nothing, and he is a burden on his owner; whithersoever he directeth him to go, he bringeth no good. Is he equal with one who enjoineth justice and followeth a straight path (of conduct)?

14- Despite all of these similitude man is still contentious:

18:54 And verily We have displayed for mankind in this Qur'an all manner of similitudes, but man is more than anything contentious.
